India :

India has come a long way in becoming in one of the prime destinations for quality education which comes at reasonable prices compared to the States and the Land of the Queen. Post Graduate and Graduate courses have gained a good name and it is not that uncommon to see people enrolling themselves in our Indian universities from the Overseas, and this is what catching the attention of our educational authorities. However what is not being seen or observed is the rapid fall in the quality of primary education being given out from schools in India. It is my opinion that people are more driven towards enrolling their children in IB/Foreign curriculum schools where the facilities are but obvious much better compared to the normal Government and Private schools. So this leaves the parents which fall in the middle class and lower middle class income category to compromise with the sub standard quality of education for their children. I would like to list few questions which the Educational authorities of India either know and yet ignore or are totally unaware of,

1. Why is nothing done to improve the quality of education and facilities in the Municipal Corporation run schools. It is a well known fact that the condition in these places is plain stale and just god forsaken and that people who send their pupils to these schools do so since they cant afford better education for their children. Still cant these children be given something which is actually rightfully theirs ?

2. Why is there no check on the educational qualifications of the professors and teachers which are appointed to teach children in public schools these days ? It has been my personal experience that teachers who used to teach large number of children were actually without a B.Ed degree themselves. Also many of them lacked the ability to speak basic simple English and they were unable to converse with children in English, let alone teach them subjects in English.

3. What is the use of bragging about cheap and efficient Graduate and Post Graduate courses in India when the standard of Primary schooling in India is not upto mark. I mean when a child’s basics are not clear he or she will face quite a few problems in their future studies. I have many friends, who inspite of having good marks in school time still have to take English speaking courses in order to be with the teacher’s lecture rhythm. I mean whats the use of learning English for ten years during school times and then still go enroll for a English speaking course at the end, this clearly means that English is not being taught as it should be.

4. It is a common thing that all of us know that education in our nation is clearly based on a student’s memorizing powers and not on reasoning and application powers since the exam system can be easily cracked even with a night of studies compared to the conventional thought of studies that should span through months. Why dont the educational authorities come up with something like weekly tests and PROJECTS !! I put heavy weight on this word because this is what truly shows how much a student has understood of a particular subject, if this flops this easily shows a student’s lack of understanding. Also this keeps a student’s mind and efforts on studies in such a way that it becomes less boring and more interactive, which by the end makes a permanent place in a student’s memory. So why stick with the system that only tests a pupil’s memorizing power and not their understanding ?

At last there might be many reasonings and technicalities that may be involved behind this question, but what I have written is purely what a common student faces and observes in our nation. At last I would just like to say that everyone learns till their death and that the same rule applies to me as well.

Thank you

The state of student quality is largely due to the level of quality of teachers. The quality of the teachers mow largely depend on the quality of education that their own respective teachers handed down to them. Quality begets quality.

Mr.kushal great words to limelighting education dilemma in indian education sector. The governments is opening higher education institutes such as six IIT’s in different parts of the country, but no one is concerned with the primary education (or call it as the base making education),india is lacking in every field to boost up primry education.

Primary schooling, if effective and excellent, has the potential to make almost every matriculate employable, if not as a techie or an i-banker, at least as a store cashier or a data entry operator, etc. This, in essence will mitigate the huge problem of under employment that India is facing. So, instead on focusing on having reservations for grad and post-grad courses, we need to build more world-class temples of primary learning that is accessible to the poorest of the poor.

I agree cent per cent with whatever is written in this post. Primary education is the foundation on which the entire life of an individual is based and unfortunately we find many a talent going astray due to poor foundations. Our Government does not seem to realize the importance of this very vital phase of learning that determines what an individual is going to be in his life.

Of course our education system should incorporate more of conceptual and application oriented learning which actually adds to assimilation of knowledge than promote learning by memorizing and English being a language for globalcommunication needs to be taught well at schools. Added to that the overall personality and value systems of the child should be groomed.

As education has turned into a business these days I think investing in institutions offering professional education seems to be more profitable for the government and that’s why they run head over heals to make improvements out there and neglect the primary educational institutions

Lets not lament about government schools. The so called ”modern” schools that brag about imparting the latest modes of teaching can be called criminals as in the name of providing the latest form of education they extract obscene amounts of money from the parents and have a confused and haphazard curriculum in an effort to meet the tall promises they make to the parents. In all this tassle the child is the biggest loser.
